artist statement notes draft edited by lucy
My current practice explores painting with a narrative, these narratives explore social identities and issues with themes of withdrawal and responding to an environment. I refer to literature and films to develop and explore my ideas.
My most recent work is a series of paintings which respond to the idea of an individual being taken out of society and placed in a hotel environment, The idea is for the character in the paintings is to explore themselves without the influence of society and the privacy of being withdrawn from social media. The paintings situate in a hotel environment, this environment was chosen from the influence of films and literature which explore the positive and negative effects of a person in isolation.
I respond to these ideas through painting with oils from a medium to large scale. I am ambitious with technique and I'm always keen to develop it.My paintings are built up of mostly individual unblended brushstrokes to show a depth by layering and detail influenced by impressionist, abstract, figurative painters, I want my painting style to develop to be unique. I paint figuratively with the focal point of the painting being the figure, I also paint detailed backgrounds which is supportive of my concept and allows me to experiment with colour.
My current practice involves exploring an individual's self concept of who they are and how being part of a society can construct an unconscious change in identity over time. T communicate this by painting self-portraits and working with a personal narrative. The self portraits appear uncertain, verging on un recognisable, but they represent me and the confusion that comes with being between two identities. I can therefore place myself in familiar yet unknown environments, My work imagines withdrawing an individual from society and placing them in a new environment, this responds to frustrations and suffocation's a society can cause, my work responds to ideas to do with a society's collective concious and an individual's subconscious. My work engages with issues of the everyday, for example, the negative effects of social media and how there's a confusion with boundaries where privacy is concerned.
My interests lie in the manipulation of painting mediums and focusing on brushwork. This has led to my paintings being characterised by visible brushstrokes which aim to create depth by layering, I am always aiming to develop my painting style and strengthen my technique. The grounds of my work are informed by a traditional figurative structure, but instinctively, the work becomes more abstracted and gestural from the painting process. The painting technique works with individual brushstrokes looking disordered yet together links with the themes of uncertainty in the work.
